Review: Is Jesus Worth It?

Sep 8, 2017

Do you struggle to understand the Bible on your own? Or are you looking to dig deeper into the Bible, and how it applies to your life? Then this is the book for you!

Is Jesus Worth It?: Igniting your Faith When You Feel Like Quitting by Stacey Thacker is a study of the book of Hebrews. It’s the first book in a series called The Girlfriend’s Guide to the Bible. In it Stacey explains and guides us through Hebrews, even the confusing parts, in a way that makes them clear and shows us what it means in the everyday.

The series title says it well. It feels like your girlfriend is coming along side you to study Hebrews and guide you through it. Stacey explains and gives insight to the text and helps make the confusing parts clear all the while giving you a thirst for Bible study and a desire to go running to Jesus yourself.

Is Jesus Worth It? is more of a book than your traditional Bible study. There aren’t lots of questions and blanks to fill in throughout, and it doesn’t go through the book of Hebrews verse by verse. Instead, at the beginning of each chapter, Stacey gives us verses from Hebrews and other books of the Bible. Then, she dives in deep to those verses helping us to understand what they mean and apply what we’re learning to our lives. I love that part! If you still want questions to answer, she has a study guide in the back that you could do alone or with a few friends.

All that is good, but the subtitle “Igniting Your Faith When You Feel Like Quitting” is not to be missed. Stacey gets real about the times when life makes you want to throw in the towel and quit. Even as I read this book, life began to overwhelm me: sick kids, husband traveling, overwhelmed at work… In the middle of all that, Stacey’s book felt like a friend coming alongside me and encouraging me to get up and keep going because Jesus is worth it. He has been where I am, he understands, and he longs to comfort and give strength as I seek to be his light in my corner of the world.
