This has been a long study. I’m proud of you for sticking it out, or if you didn’t begin with us, at least ending strong. Finding the time to spend time with God daily can be a huge challege! Commitments, kids, exhaustion can all play a part in keeping us from our most important commitment.
While listening to Lysa TerKeurst (Thanks, Erin, for the recommendation!) talk about her new book on KLove one morning, I heard the best allogy I even have for why one should make it a priority to make God your first commitment of the day.
Lysa said that she likens herself to a dry sponge, and whatever she soaks herself in first each day is what will penetrate deepest. She also soaks up other stuff as she goes along, conversations with her children, posts from her friends, a phone call, but the very first thing becomes the most influential as she is squeezed during the day. If she soaks up God first thing, then God is what comes out the most. However, if she soaks in something else, say an argument with a child, then those emotions will be the first thing to come out. (For those of you who study right before bed, and I know there’s a few of you : ) I’m sure the same principal applies. You just get a jump on the rest of us.)
I hate mornings. I REALLY do. However, I’ve noticed that on those days when I get even 15 minutes alone before the boys get up (and yes, sometimes I let them sit for a few of those minutes), then I’m a much better mom. Because really, parenting a 2 1/2 yr. old and a 1 yr old squeezes you a lot! So what are you soaking up first thing everyday? Is it God and His word, or is it something else?
Even if you’re starting late, or doing your own study, please join us this week as we work to encourage each other to make spending time with God a priority. Oh, you will mess up, but you can also get back up, grab your favorite hot drink, and join us as we work at it together.
