For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.–Eph. 2:10, ESV

Last week in class, Steve Dye pointed out how “workmanship” in this verse would be better translated “masterpiece,” an artistic endeavor that significant time is devoted to.

Then as I read this verse again this morning in a devotional book, I realized that “good works” don’t always mean “big” works. In the past, when I have thought of the works God might have planned for me, I always thought of possible works related to my academic career or doing a great mission work one day. But today I realized that most of those “good works” are going to be things like doing the laundry, washing the dishes, straitening the house, cooking dinner, loving on Ethan, being a good wife and mother.

As I read through the Bible nowadays, I am slowly realizing I’m not less of a masterpiece to God because my primary job is a wife and mother. Quite the opposite. Especially reading through 1 and 2 Kings and 1 and 2 Chronicles, I’m beginning to see how one good or bad mother had the power to influence a nation.

So as I care for my family today, I will keep in mind that these daily tasks are the good works God has called me to today and part of his plan to make me into the masterpiece he desires me to be.
