I can’t believe that Ethan is 6 mo. old today (yesterday)! It has gone so fast! I look at the newborns at church and find it hard to believe that he’s grown that much in such a short time.
In the last 6 mo. I’ve learned that it is much harder learning to make sacrifices for your kids than I thought. I want to be a mom, and I enjoy being a mom, but your life changes completely from me centered to one of constant sacrifice. I didn’t realize how me centered my life really was till I became a mom.
It’s amazing, though, how much your perspective changes once you become a parent, too. Things like riding ATV’s that I didn’t even think about before, now seem much more dangerous and risky. I’ve also got a new perspective on TV and movies. For example, I love the Discovery channel, but as my Mom pointed out the Planet Earth and Life series on Discovery are very evolution based. Life seems completely based around the idea of evolution and changes that species use to adapt, and it assumes we all came from some blob in the ocean. Which is frustrating because the pictures and the other information are so interesting. That’s where they get you. Wrap it in a very enticing package.
Back to Ethan…He is changing so much lately! One week he eats his cereal nicely and the next he’s learned a trick where he tucks his lower lip up under his upper lip so I can’t sneak the food in. He sometimes he sits there smiling and blowing bubbles, then the minute I moved to give him a bite, he sucks his lower lip up. It was pretty funny, and I’m guessing our laughter didn’t help matters at all : ) Then this week he’s back to chowing down. I guess it keeps you on your toes!
He’s also sitting up by himself pretty well, though he still topples over sometimes, and he has began getting up on his toes and pushing backwards when he’s on his tummy. He also learned how to roll over from back to front last week. Now he’s just got to learn how to sleep through it.
I guess I’m changing a lot, too. Learning how to balance work, mommyhood, the house…. It too is much harder than I thought. For instance, in our bible class yesterday Jim Dvorak was teaching in the New Testament. The way he taught by bringing in the culture and world views of the time period made me so hungry for school and learning again. In the past, I would be able to focus on work and then drop everything else and really dive into the books and articles that interest me and learn more. Now I have to figure out how to still learn what I want to, without dropping everything else. I’m not very good at balance, but I’m realizing I need to learn. Though all of this, I’m quickly finding out that’s want parenting is all about—Learning.
